Veneti, Namnetes, Stater
2nd-1st century BC - Electrum - VF(30-35)
Profile to the right, with Apollonian origins, from which come four beaded cords, two from the forehead and two from the nape of the neck, linked to small human heads. To the right of the profile, a cross with a branch touching the forehead and cutting the beaded cord. Before the chin, a yoke-shaped bracket.
Androcephalic horse to the right, surmounted by an charioteer, holding the reins in his right hand and brandishing his left hand, clearly visible, with his thumb spread out and the 5 fingers distinguishable. Below, a hippophoric figure, head to the right, with outstretched arms touching the horse's legs.
Typical example of the group of staters ‘with the cross’ (Dt. 2187-2190), whose origins correspond to the Namnetes and Veneti territories (Nantes and Vannes area). Unfortunately, the specimen was not well struck, and the weak strike only slightly printed the details of the motifs, although the reverse is much more precise. Some of the designs, such as the charioteer's hand, are still clearly identifiable and help to determine the variety of this stater in the classification.
